Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra – “Corona”

Listen

A piano-reduction Score is available for purchase through ALRY Publications.

Recognized as the Honorable Mention composition by the New Music Committee of the International Clarinet Association as part of the 2022 Composition Competition.

2020 was a year of colossal uncertainty and instability in nearly every facet of our day-to-day lives. But that uncertainty hit performing artists the hardest because it effectively shut down our professional lives entirely. As the year went on, I quickly found that I had to cope in a creative way with all the strange and powerful emotions that each new uncertainty brought. And this piece, Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra, was the result of such mental self-care.

In five movements: Everything ChangesIsolationOutrage at 45In Memoriam, and The Endless Anxiety.

Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra

Listen

Full score, parts, and piano-reduction are available for purchase through TUX People’s Music.

A concerto in three movements for solo trombone and full orchestra. The first movement is powerful and allows the soloist to play in nearly the entire register of the instrument. The second movement is a slow and sweet song. And the third movement is a fast and rhythmic race to the finale.

A tone-poem for full orchestra.

In July of 2019, I participated in the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival conducting program in Fairbanks, Alaska. During my two weeks there, I studied and performed a variety of repertoire ranging from Mozart to Brahms with some amazing musicians. During our weekend break, I took a trip to Denali National Park with some of my colleagues at the workshop. As soon as we arrived, I was immediately struck by the beauty and magnitude of the park. Aside from one small dirt road and the occasional rest station, it is completely untouched by humans. The landscapes in the park are beautiful and bountiful stretching out for miles of wilderness. The entire park seemed to hum with life at every angle. And soon after venturing in, the scenery inspired a melody, which soon after transformed into a tone poem depicting my journey through the park.

The Flower Song from Carmen (Bizet)

“La Fleur Que Tu M’Avais Jetée” or commonly referred to as “The Flower Song” is a tenor aria in Georges Bizet’s opera “Carmen”. In the piece, Don Jose confesses his love to Carmen by presenting her with the flower that she gave him earlier in the opera. Filled with lush melodies and dramatic harmonies, this beautiful aria exemplifies romantic French opera. I’ve adapted this piece specifically for youth/community orchestra. The key is transposed into C-major (as opposed to the original D-flat major), and the instrumentation includes most of the full orchestra.

Sol

Full score and parts are available for purchase via TUX People’s Music.

This piece takes its name from the Latin word for the sun and describes the rays of light from the sun throughout the day. The piece starts with the sunrise: a thin orchestra of strings and solo woodwinds that slowly builds up to a bright full sound. Followed by the afternoon: a lively dance that builds in intensity and fervor. Lastly, the long colorful rays of sunset: the full orchestra singing out and slowly fading to only upper strings and harp as the sun disappears into the evening sky.

Symphony No. 1 – “Autumn”

Listen

Full score and parts are available for purchase via TUX People’s Music.

The name “Autumn” is taken from a poem of the same name by the Russian poet Alexander Pushkin. I originally used the text from this poem to compose a piece for SATB choir. The themes from that earlier piece are used as the basis for the 2nd and 4th movements of the symphony. Coincidentally, most of the symphony was composed during the Falls of 2016 and 2017. This piece is dedicated to my teacher, mentor, and friend, Christopher James Lees.

In four movements:

  • I. Moderato con moto
  • II. Adagio espressivo
  • III. Adagietto con ansia
  • IV. Largo – Presto con spirito
